Author Terri Ragsdale published the original version of ROOTS OF INDIFFERENCE in 2009 and subsequently won the 2011 Pinnacle Book Achievement Award for history. Now the book is in Kindle edition, and despite the transitional flaws in conversion that need to be addressed, the book retains the importance awarded it by readers and critics. Ragsdale was raised in South Texas, attended Mesa University of Colorado and the University of Colorado, worked as a Civil Service employee with the Department of Revenue, served as an interpreter, and worked with the Grand Junction Court System. She now is retired to commit her energies to writing and traveling. Her background is of significance for this novel, and as she states, `My book is an historical, fictional novel set in the period from 1910 to 1941. The research in this saga took 20 years to complete. It entailed getting the historical information from stories told by the older generations in vivid details about their experiences. After living in the Rio Grande Valley, I learned that the atrocities that took place were being kept a secret and never discussed in school or the educational system. By doing intense research, I opened up a new world of information on articles never before told or written. This gave me the opportunity to write in a novel form about the lives of a forgotten people. It's a book that totally describes the struggles and patience of the Mexican-American people living in a ruthless time and era that was lawless. It was after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed and opportunists moved in, with greed, buying the land for pennies and running the region with a gun and a whip. The complete transformation became disheartening and the majority became indifferent, separating two nationalities in their own heritage and culture.'ROOTS OF INDIFFERENCE relates the injustices during a time so pertinent to the history of ethnic inequality. The history of the Rio Grande River affected the citizens living on both sides of the border - the imperialistic haughty `northern Americans' and the culture of a generation of Hispanics. To the author's credit she opens her book with a Prologue that relates the interaction of an elderly Mexican physician for both animals and humans, Fred Juelson, who is returning to Texas after a long absence and encounters abuse from some young Hispanic ruffians - a move that sets the tone for Juelson's recollections over the years of how time has changed the little town of Mercedes at the Texas Mexican border. The story is fact based fiction - a technique that allows the drama to bend to the will of the writer yet offer a valid exam of life and conditions during the time and location of the story. Wisely, Ragsdale incorporates supernatural incidents predicted and caused by the healers (`cuarandera'), and those practicing witchcraft - a factor that yields a sense of drama and a fine reflection of Mexican culture. There are murders, forbidden love affairs, conflicts and tensions that well describe the milieu and hence the history of a silent people, the victims of the animosity that raged at the border. Reading Ragsdale's book will underscore the problems we currently are encountering with the bitter debates over immigration of a people who were the first inhabitants of this `land of opportunity'. This book is LONG but well written and it contains a lot of history that we don’t often think much about any more which I personally enjoy. The author does a good job building characters. I think that this is a book for people of all ages and that it would be welcome reading for school projects or book reports. This is a story of injustice, racism, wartimes and everything else that was going on in the early 1900’s. I absolutely love reading fiction that is so well done that you believe it to have actually happened as written and that is what Terri Ragsdale does, she brings us to the past and lets us live through her characters so we can understand how bad things were. A MUST READ!
There is far more to this book than historical research and insightful revelations about race relations in the United States. While those things can certainly be gained from these pages, the far more poignant thing that I took away from this read is that Ragsdale is a consummate storyteller. If this had been a novel set in a less controversial time and place, I firmly believe that her ability to spin a gripping and powerful tale would not be lessened. The reason this book stuck out to me as exceptionally well written is that she was able to appeal to my love of history as well as my deep love of well-written novels. She flexed her authorial muscles and ranged from supernatural elements and Gabriel Garcia Marquez style fiction to deep, historical reference that has significant long-term impacts even on life today for that region and Mexican-Americans.
There was a beautiful flow in the story that showed how confident she was in her subject matter and in the direction she was moving the story. Although there were a few strangely worded phrases and a bit of copy editing may have made this book absolutely perfect, I cannot fault the author for the occasional slip in that regard. She was tackling far more important issues and themes, and doing it tremendously well. Don't let the size of this book intimidate you; you'll be finished before you know it and considering how long it would be appropriate to wait before reading it again. An impressive achievement.
Despite the human fascination with history and what has happened in the past, our memories are noticeably weaker when it comes to the uglier points of history. We are happy to talk about our achievements and triumphs, but as the old adage says, "History is written by the victors". Roots of Indifference digs into one of those less discussed elements of American history and is a truly comprehensive and ambitious book that seeks to flesh out and unearth some of the events and culture that surrounded the Mexico-Texas border and the Rio Grande Valley. What makes this even more spectacular as a novel was that it was fiction, although it was completely interwoven with ideas and situations that could have easily (or did) happen in those troubling years. This impossibility of separating fact from fiction made this book very hard to put down, and while it did have a number of slow sections, I was generally thrilled to keep reading for hours at a time. I think the prose became a bit lost occasionally, not through any real fault of the author, but the subject matter and the plot allowed for a great deal of tangential discussion of other issues. Sometimes, the plot would be seemingly forgotten as a historical ramble sort of took the reader out of the story. That is my only real critique, and to be honest, those historical caveats and asides made the book all the more tangible and valuable as a historical reference point. This period in American history is so rarely talked about, and this book by Ragsdale is one of the most eye-opening, thought-provoking, and moving books on this subject (or any other) that I have read in a long time.
